Reading shapes before names
A short exercise in lines, intervals and negative space.
Temporarily ignore the subject
For a few minutes, describe the scene using only shapes: a pale rectangle, a dark triangle, three vertical lines. This can reveal a composition that familiar labels hide.
Find the interval
Look at the space between two objects. Move a little to change that interval. Small shifts can separate overlapping forms or make a rhythm more legible without changing the subject itself.
Simplify one edge
Inspect the edges of the frame. If something is half included without a clear purpose, either give it room or leave it out. The aim is a deliberate boundary, not a perfectly tidy scene.
Return to the subject
Once the shapes work, ask whether the picture still says something about the place. Formal balance is useful, but it should support the observation. Keep both versions if the comparison teaches you something.
