Follow the last light
Watch a boundary of light move through a familiar scene.

Imagined landscape illustration; not a map of this activity.
Choose a simple return
Use a familiar route and leave enough time to return comfortably. You do not need a remote viewpoint or a clear horizon. A wall, a row of trees or a patch of pavement can show the change in light.
Find a boundary
Look at where direct light meets shade. Make a frame that includes both. Observe whether a small subject sits inside the light or crosses its edge, then try a second composition with a different amount of background.
Watch the colour
Compare a surface in direct light with a similar surface in shade. Let the difference remain visible while reviewing. Correcting every colour towards a neutral value can remove the observation you set out to make.
Finish with a note
Keep one image and a short description of the direction and quality of light. Use an approximate time rather than treating this as a timetable for another place or season. Return when the conditions suit you.
